Çanakkale & Gallipoli Wreck Diving Guide 2026

Choose Gallipoli when the goal is a historically controlled wreck itinerary. Choose Saros when the goal is reef, wall, training or a broader natural-site weekend. Do not treat “Çanakkale diving” as one interchangeable product.

The Gallipoli Historic Underwater Park opened in October 2021 with 14 wrecks made available for diving tourism. Çanakkale’s Provincial Directorate also states that approved tourism-sport routes remain in force and that operating outside approved or declared routes can lead to penalties.

Historic Underwater Park is not a general wreck free-for-all

• Confirm the exact approved wreck and route.
• Use a TSSF-authorised centre and the assigned guide.
• Ask what permission or park process applies on the dive date.
• Do not enter, touch, move or remove historical material.
• Do not assume an opening in a wreck permits penetration.
• Follow current photography, lighting and archaeological-protection rules.

Depth figures are heritage and planning context, not a dive authorisation. The operating centre must state the exact route and maximum planned depth for the day.

External observation vs wreck penetration

A wreck dive can remain entirely outside the structure. Penetration adds overhead, silt, sharp metal, entanglement, navigation and gas-management risks and may also conflict with heritage rules.

• Ask whether the route is exterior-only.
• Ask whether daylight and direct ascent remain continuously available.
• Confirm training, guide qualification, line and gas rules for any overhead route.
• Do not follow another diver through an opening without a declared plan.
• Do not use a travel listing’s “explore inside” phrase as proof of legal or training suitability.

Current and visibility

The Dardanelles and Saros are influenced by different bodies of water, topography and local weather. A famous wreck name does not guarantee a calm descent or clear visibility.

• Ask about current direction and expected strength.
• Confirm descent line, negative-entry or static-line procedures where relevant.
• Check lost-line, lost-buddy and aborted-descent procedures.
• Use a site-appropriate DSMB and computer when required.
• Ask how the centre changes the plan when current or visibility is outside the intended range.

Saros as a separate dive destination

Official tourism sources list İbrice Port, Cennet, Cehennem, Toplar Cape, Asker Taşı, Üç Adalar, Kömür Limanı, Bebek and Minnoş among Saros sites. These can support natural-life, wall, reef, training and selected wreck products.

• Confirm shore versus boat entry.
• Check steps, rocks, surf and carrying distance for shore sites.
• Ask about current, thermocline and exposure protection.
• Separate training dives from deeper wall or wreck profiles.
• Do not assume every Saros centre operates Historic Underwater Park dives.

Certification and recent-experience review

Do not book accommodation only from the word “Gelibolu.” Get the actual harbour, meeting point and morning reporting time from the operating centre.

• Postpone the wreck request: when certification, recent experience, current skills or the day’s conditions do not match.
